Abstract

Uruguay has shown a growing commitment to the circular economy (CE) through various initiatives promoted by the public, academic and private sectors. However, the development of systemic solutions that enable the establishment of circular business models and sustainable value chains remains an underexplored area. This study focuses on the evaluation of the circularity of 27 Uruguayan companies from sectors such as agri-food, industrial, services and waste management, using the NETcircular+ tool developed by the Circular Economy and Industrial Sustainability Group (ECSI) of Mondragón, Spain.

Through this methodology, the level of adoption of circular practices in different business areas was measured, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to improve their circular performance. Preliminary results indicate that companies have a significant level of awareness about environmental challenges, but still face limitations in the integration of circular practices. This work represents an initial step in the development of diagnostic and monitoring metrics for business circularity in Uruguay, with a view to establishing a baseline and allowing future comparative studies with the European context.
