Abstract

This study evaluates the feasibility of producing green hydrogen (GH2) at the Central-Southern Regional Technological Institute (ITR-CS) of the Technological University (UTEC), located in Durazno, Uruguay, using solar and wind energy. The available energy resource was estimated using satellite data from the Global Solar Atlas and the Global Wind Atlas, and the surface area required to generate 1 kg/day of GH2 through electrolysis was calculated. At 80% efficiency, between 18.8 m² (wind) and 61.1 m² (solar) are required. Additionally, water consumption was analyzed using two sources (the public water supply and the Yi River), considering variations in faradaic and voltage efficiency. Total water consumption ranged from 800 to 857 liters per day for a hypothetical plant installed on a 3500 m² surface. The results underscore the importance of voltage efficiency in reducing water use and the potential of ITR-CS to contribute to the national green hydrogen and carbon neutrality strategy.
